Powerlifting
Powerlifting
Bench press, deadlift, and squat are the three lifts that make up the powerlifting discipline. It involves the participant trying a maximal weight single-lift effort using a barbell laden with weight plates, much as the Olympic weightlifting competition. The sport of "odd lifts," which employed a three-attempt system akin to strongman competition but with a wider choice of events, gave rise to powerlifting. The three odd lifts that are currently used are the product of evenness through time.
During competition, lifts may be performed with or without equipment (usually known as "classic" or "raw" lifting in the IPF specifically). The term "equipment" here refers to a bench shirt that support the body in lifting heavier weights, a squat and a deadlift suit, or a pair of briefs. Knee coverings are permitted in the unequipped category of several federations but not in the equipped level, and vice versa. When determining if a lift is equipped or not, wrist straps, back supporting belts, knee supporters (sleeves), and a specific footwear may also be used.
Competitions are held everywhere in the world. Through the IPF, powerlifting has been a World Games event for more than 40 years and has been a Paralympic sport since 1984 (bench press alone). Local, national, and international contests have also been sanctioned by other federations that are independent of the IPF.
