The sport of bodybuilding first gained popularity in the 19th century, thanks to Eugen Sandow, a German man who is now known as the "Father of Modern Bodybuilding." In muscle flexing contests, he allowed the public to enjoy seeing his body. Using muscular hypertrophy to manage and aesthetically enlarge one's muscles is known as bodybuilding. It is distinct from comparable sports like powerlifting because it places more of an emphasis on aesthetic beauty than physical strength. Bodybuilding improves your physical and mental health, elevates your mood, releases stress and irritability, improves the quality of your sleep, helps you forget about worries and difficult situations in life, and helps you reclaim control over your body, mind, and life.

Bodybuilders routinely exercise to maintain and increase their muscles, including both resistance and aerobic training. Resistance training increases muscular flexibility, growth, and strength. A reduction in mortality from chronic illnesses including cancer, heart disease, renal disease, and other serious ailments is correlated with muscular strength.

The Mr. Olympia competition was developed as a bodybuilding contest. At Joe Weider's Olympia Fitness & Performance Weekend, an annual international bodybuilding competition run by the International Federation of Bodybuilding & Fitness, the champion of the professional men's bodybuilding competition is given the title of Mr. Olympia.
